Founded in 1993 with the purchase of 93 scenic acres just west of King’s Canyon National Park the Cat Haven offers guided tours of some of the rarest cats in the world. It also promotes grass-root level support for range country conservation through Project Survival, a 501 (c) (3) organization.
Project Survival’s Cat Haven is located at an elevation of 2400′ – 3000′, 15 miles west of King’s Canyon National Park, an area internationally famous for its giant sequoia redwood trees. The nearest major city is Fresno, California, forty-five miles to the west.
Try to wear comfortable walking shoes. The quarter-mile walking tour is on a decomposed granite trail which is sloped in places. Plan to stay 1.5 hours at Cat Haven.
If you have visitors in your party who need special assistance (example: difficulty walking steep terrain or long distances), please call ahead and inform the Cat Haven in advance when planning your visit. We have a golf cart available but ONLY IF YOU CALL AHEAD! We will do what we can to help. You can also consider booking one of our indoor educational programs. These are an enjoyable alternative which have been very well received by groups ranging from seniors to homeschoolers.
Weather preparation helps to make your tour thoroughly enjoyable. In summer, wear a hat and sunscreen. Although the path is partially shaded, drink plenty of water before you set out. You may want to carry a bottle of water with you. During the winter season, be prepared for unexpected weather and wear layers. Always be alert for unexpected road conditions.
No pets or service animals are permitted on site. If you are traveling with your pet, we have a kennel available for use in the parking lot.
Tours are conducted during our business hours and to give our staff a lunch break, no tours will be conducted between 2:00 and 2:30 pm
You'll get a chance to meet close to 25 cats, learn about each species, and discover some of the conservation efforts Cat Haven supports.
Project Survival’s Cat Haven promotes the conservation and preservation of wild cats in their native habitat by educating visitors and publicizing the work done by Project Survival Cat Conservation Group. Project Survival’s Cat Haven maintains an educational room at the facility for youth programs and an outreach program. The Cat Haven is designed to act as ‘base camp’ in the belief that preserving wild cats in their native habitat is the principle justification for maintaining them in captivity. Project Survival is engaged in fundraising, including the creation of endowments, to support wild life specialists and educators working in range countries.
